An historic final between two of the club’s finest — Gonzalo Ocejo and Marcos de Lucio. Matched handicaps, exceptional ball-striking, and everything to play for. The perfect stage for a proper contest.
Saturday morning came with storm clouds gathering and both finalists on the tee at 7:40.
And a contest it was. The first nine holes were a relentless back-and-forth — shot for shot, hole for hole, neither man giving an inch. All square after nine. Exactly what the match deserved.
The back nine continued in the same vein. Marcos, solid and composed, built his lead with the patience of a player who trusts his game completely. They reached the 15th tee with De Lucio 1 up, firmly in control of the match.
That’s when the Ocejo who shows up in big moments arrived. He won the 15th to level. A birdie on 16 to go 1 up. And on 17, he produced a recovery shot of the highest order and an approach that will long be remembered. The match was closed out before they ever reached the last hole.
